T&G Global is thrilled to share that the recipient of the 2024 Edward Turner Horticulture Futures Grant is Francis Ferrada-Hartley, a Master’s student at Massey University. This prestigious post-graduate grant, valued at $10,000, is designed to support the next generation of science and business leaders who will shape and drive the horticulture sector forward.
T&G’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Adrienne Sharp, expressed her enthusiasm; “We are delighted to appoint Francis as this year’s recipient of the Edward Turner Horticulture Futures Grant. This year, we received a remarkable volume of compelling applications, showcasing the bright young minds emerging in our sector. Francis’ dedication and innovative approach to pest and disease management truly stood out.”
Francis’ research focuses on exploring the prevalence of leaf mould caused by Fulvia fulva strains in leaf mould-resistant tomatoes. This work is vital as leaf mould poses a serious threat to tomato yields in Aotearoa New Zealand’s commercial glasshouses.
Originally from Chile, Francis holds a diploma in science and a Bachelor of Horticultural Science from Massey University. He also has practical experience that complements his extensive research, having worked within a number of protected and covered cropping businesses, including being currently employed by T&G Fresh.
Francis expressed his gratitude, stating, “I feel extremely honoured and grateful to be awarded this year’s grant; I almost couldn’t believe it. The Edward Turner Horticulture Futures Grant will enable the expansion of the scope of my Master’s research project, by allowing access to crucial elements for identification and characterisation of the pathogen of interest such as PCR and DNA kits, and access to genome sequencing technologies.”
“Throughout my life, I’ve witnessed the dedication and sacrifices that people in the food industry make to ensure the safety, stability and sustainability of our food chain. I’ve also come to appreciate the incredibly complex, often invisible journey that food takes before it reaches our tables—and how it’s intrinsically connected to our planet. This grant will take me one step closer to becoming an industry leader, reinforcing my commitment to horticulture.”
